Raymond Terry Usher IV, dit Usher ou encore Usher Raymond, est un chanteur de R'n'B, danseur, acteur, parolier et enfin producteur américain, né le 14 octobre 1978 à Chattanooga dans le Tennessee.
Biographie
Raymond Usher IV est né à Chattanooga, dans le Tennessee, le 14 octobre 1978. Sa famille est d'origine haïtienne. C'est à l'occasion d'un concours amateur dans la ville d'Atlanta qu'un dirigeant de LaFace Records découvre le jeune Usher Raymond qui n'est alors âgé que de 14 ans. En peu de temps, sa carrière prend une tangente étonnante puisque L.A. Reid n'hésite pas à offrir un contrat à celui qui était jusque là enfant de chœur.
Il est alors propulsé sur la scène musicale grâce à son premier album « Usher ». Reid ne lésine pas et entoure bien son poulain qui lance un premier album en 1994 dont la réalisation est signée par Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. De plus, on n'utilise que son prénom, laissant son nom de famille de côté. Le premier extrait, Think of You, lui permet de décrocher un disque d'or. Son succès lui permet de contribuer à d'autres projets. Il enregistre notamment un single pour la campagne nationale du temps des fêtes de Coca-Cola en 1995. Il contribue également au projet Black Men United, un groupe qui enregistre le simple You will Know pour le film Jason's Lyric. On le voit également aux côtés de Monica sur la pièce Let's Straighten It Out, reprise de Latimore lors des Jeux Olympiques.
Au terme de ses études secondaires, Usher lance un second album, My Way, qui paraît en 1997. Tentant de démontrer une nouvelle maturité et sa capacité à composer, il cosigne six des neuf titres du disque en plus de recruter Jermaine Dupri, Babyface et Sean P. Diddy Combs pour réaliser l'opus. Le premier single, « You Make Me Wanna », lui permet de s'établir parmi les figures dominantes de la scène Rn'B en plus de lui permettre de connaître le succès du côté de la pop. La chanson reste onze semaines en tête du palmarès R&B et atteint le second échelon du décompte pop tout en s'écoulant à plus de deux millions d'exemplaires. Les deux extraits suivants, Nice & Slow et My Way, atteignent aussi la certification platine alors que « Nice & Slow » devient le premier numéro un d'Usher sur le palmarès pop.
Non content de ses succès musicaux, Usher décide de tenter sa chance au cinéma. C'est ainsi qu'on le voit notamment dans les films The Faculty en 1998 ainsi que dans Light It Up et Elle est trop bien en 1999. Conscient que son aventure cinématographique met la patience de ses fans à rude épreuve, il leur propose un album live en 1999.
Finalement, en 2001, le grand producteur Italo-américain Rinaldi Luciano, lui fait signer un contrat il passe officiellement du statut de jeune vedette montante à celui de star de la R&B avec « 8701 », un album qui s'inscrit sous le signe de la maturité. En Septembre 2001, il participe au 2 concerts célébrant les 30 années de carrière solo du Roi de la Pop Michael Jackson, notamment en dansant et chantant avec lui sur You Rock My World, et à la fin du spectacle sur We are the World. En 2004, le jeune chanteur revient en force avec Confessions. Les titres de l'album Yeah!, Burn, Confessions, Caught Up caracolent en tête des charts du monde entier et l'album se vend à 16 millions d'exemplaires, le plus grand succès de l'année 2004. En 2005, Usher réédite son album Confessions où est inclus le duo avec Alicia Keys My Boo qui reste numéro 1 pendant 2 mois. En 2006, Usher sort son film In the mix où il incarne le rôle d'un DJ.
L'épouse de Usher, Tameka Foster, a donné naissance à un garçon qui s'appelle Usher Raymond V, le 26 novembre 2007 à 9h30 à Atlanta, en Géorgie. Ils s'étaient mariés le 3 aout 2007. Leur deuxième enfant est né le 10 décembre 2008.
Depuis le 12 Juin 2009, Usher et Tameka Foster sont divorcés.
Usher sort en mai 2008 un album intitulé Here I Stand, qui dépasse les 2 millions d'exemplaires vendus dans le monde. C'est l'album le moins vendu de Usher sans compter son album sortit en 1994.
Il sera classé numéro 1 des ventes aux USA, avec 1 168 630 d'exemplaires vendus aux États-Unis.
